Super Bowl XLIV Ends With a Bang

The South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee sincerely congratulates the New Orleans Saints for earning the title of Super Bowl XLIV Champions. And we commend the Indianapolis Colts for being worthy and classy opponents. Both teams put on a great show for the world and one that will go down in Super Bowl history.

All the hard work put in by everyone was worth it after Sunday night's spectacle. The South Florida weather did not disappoint and the scenery was perfect for the biggest stage on the planet. Simply put, we could not ask for anything better.

The Host Committee would like to thank all those that could make this happen, including our sponsors and partners that supported us every step of the way. The events we hosted leading up to Super Bowl Sunday were a great success and built up much hype en route to the big game. Our staff members are grateful for all the help.

And while Super Bowl will not be coming back for at least the next three years, we are proud to have hosted a record-breaking 10 Super Bowls. Perhaps in the future we can bring back Super Bowl to the NFL's favorite destination for their championship game, right here in South Florida.

CHAMPIONS ARCH, BUILT BY GERDAU AMERISTEEL

FEATURING RECYCLED ORANGE BOWL AND SUN LIFE STADIUM STEEL

Tribute Includes Arch over famed Ocean Drive Along with Smaller Sculptures Inspired by Past Super Bowl Champions and This Year's Teams

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - The South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee'sChampions Arch, built by Gerdau Ameristeel is towering over Miami Beach's famed Ocean Drive, illuminating the sky during Super Bowl week in tribute to the region's rich tradition of hosting Super Bowls. Champions Arch, built by Gerdau Ameristeel, was created from recycled steel from the Orange Bowl and Sun Life Stadium and includes individual works of art celebrating past Super Bowl champions and this year's conference champions.

"When the Host Committee approached us about working together to build another steel structure like we did for last year's Super Bowl in Tampa, we were very excited," said Mario Longhi, CEO of Gerdau Ameristeel. "The Orange Bowl and Sun Life Stadium have hosted some of football's greatest moments, so it seemed fitting that we would recycle steel from both stadiums to create this magnificent tribute in Miami Beach."

Processed and reborn at Gerdau Ameristeel's steel mini-mills in Calvert City, Kentucky and Midlothian, Texas, the art-deco inspired arch stands 23-feet high over Ocean Drive, with massive steel beams intersecting at the center of the arch to showcase a 12-foot steel football illuminated in various NFL team colors by powerful LED lights.

"These sculptures are some of the most unique pieces of artwork I've ever seen," said Rodney Barreto, Chairman of the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee. "It's amazing to think this is recycled steel from the Orange Bowl and Sun Life Stadium. Being that this is our record-breaking 10^th Super Bowl here in South Florida, it's fantastic that our Super Bowl tradition is being recognized this way."

South Florida has been host to more Super Bowls than any other community. To celebrate our Super Bowl tradition, Gerdau Ameristeel fabricated one leg of the arch with recycled Orange Bowl steel and the other from Sun Life Stadium steel. The roman numerals etched in either leg symbolize every Super Bowl played in South Florida. The two intersecting arches create a visual and symbolic "passing of the ball" from one stadium to the other.

Dick Anderson Appointed as Sub-Committee Chairman

MIAMI GARDENS, FL- Rodney Barreto, Chairman of the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee is appointing Dick Anderson as the Chairman of the Sub-Committee created to make recommendations to the Host Committee in an effort to land the 2014 Super Bowl which may include Sun Life Stadium improvements.

Dick Anderson is a former Miami Dolphin great as well as a former State Senator. Dick was also Chairman of the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee in 1989.

"I cannot think of a more qualified person than Dick to chair this sub-committee" said Rodney Barreto. "Dick is someone who not only knows this community, he understands and appreciates the economic importance of bringing Super Bowls and Pro Bowls back to South Florida."

"I'm honored to be named Sub-Committee Chairman and I look forward to working with the community on this issue," Anderson said.

At its January 7th Board Meeting, The South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee voted to form this sub-committee consisting of members of the Super Bowl Host Committee.

At the same meeting, the Miami Dolphins presented plans on Sun Life Stadium improvements that could help ensure future Super Bowls and Pro Bowls in South Florida. These renderings include building an open-air cover that would protect fans from the elements.

Joining Dick Anderson on this sub-committee are a wide range of community leaders whose goal is to help keep the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, BCS National Championship, World Cup and other world-class events coming here. That's where we'll be teaching more than 150 kids from the NFL YETs in Miami and Fort Lauderdale about the ocean, boating safety, fishing, water conservation and the environment. Dolphin Stadium is now Sun Life Stadium

First it was Dolphin Stadium, and then Land Shark Stadium, and then Dolphin Stadium again. Now, Super Bowl XLIV will be played at the Miami Dolphins' new home, Sun Life Stadium. Dolphins President Mike Dee announced the name change at an unveiling yesterday, where he was joined by Sun Life Financial executives and KC and the Sunshine Band.

After hoisting the name Land Shark Stadium for the entirety of the 2009-10 NFL regular season, the Miami Dolphins have reached a deal with Sun Life Financial, Inc. to rename the stadium Sun Life Stadium. And on a beautiful cloudless sunny day, a press conference was held at the newly dubbed Sun Life Stadium capped off by a concert by KC and the Sunshine Band.

This is now the eighth name for the stadium that opened in 1987 as Joe Robbie Stadium. But as important as it was to get this deal done before the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl XLIV, Dolphins CEO Mike Dee pointed to the entire scope of the deal as it relates to the current economy as the real news:

"This is the first naming rights deal done of significance in the post-recession period and we weren't out in the marketplace very long. A bigger priority was finding the right partner, so if that hadn't happened we were prepared to move forward under an old name. I think from our point of view it wasn't when, it was who,"

Among the invited guests were students from Plantation-American Heritage School, Super Bowl Host Committee volunteers, marketing partners, corporate sponsors, season ticket holders and local dignitaries like the Mayor Shirley Gibson of Miami Gardens, Miami-Dade Commissioner Barbara Jordan, Jeannette Sparano, wife of Head Coach Tony Sparano, and Rachel Ireland, wife of General Manager Jeff Ireland.

NFL Kicks Off Super Bowl Eve with O.A.R.

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL (January 12, 2010)--New Year's Eve-Meet Super Bowl Eve. The National Football League announced today it will host SUPER BOWL SATURDAY NIGHT, a free outdoor concert and fireworks spectacular, on Ft. Lauderdale Beach on Saturday, Feb. 6, the night before Super Bowl XLIV.

Free and open to the public, SUPER BOWL SATURDAY NIGHT is a unique entertainment event celebrating an exciting year of football and the arrival of Super Bowl XLIV. The event will include live musical performances, headlined by O.A.R., and the Super Bowl Fireworks Spectacular at Ft. Lauderdale Beach Park adjacent to the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel on A1A (Seabreeze Blvd.) just north of Holiday Drive.

Festivities will begin at 4 p.m. with a DJ set and video programming followed by live music beginning at 6 p.m. and concluding the evening with a Super Bowl Fireworks Spectacular at 9:40 p.m.
Two additional acts, which will open the concert produced by Live Nation, will be announced soon.
Fans may enter beginning at 4 p.m. Fireworks are slated to launch at 9:40 p.m. to conclude the show.

Art & Jazz on the Avenue, Delray Beach

Downtown Delray Beach will highlight the Art & Jazz on the Avenue event, an open house for merchants and restaurants that will attract Super Bowl visitors and local residents to downtown Delray. Planned activities include a punt, pass & kick competition between boys and girls of differing age groups, a flag football scrimmage between coaches and city staff verses Delray Rocks players and general public, a dodgeball game and a 40-yard dash competition. Over 60,000+ people are expected to attend this event.

The South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee's "Champions Arch" Display, built by Gerdau Ameristeel celebrates the nine past champions crowned in South Florida, while creating a visual bridge uniting the games played at the Orange Bowl and now Dolphin Stadium. Recycled steel is also used to create nine one-of-a-kind sculptures representing past champions along with the two conference champions, one of whom will join the great champions of past South Florida Super Bowls. Gerdau Ameristeel has provided the steel and built the display which spans South Beach's famed Ocean Drive along with 11 smaller structures that will be displayed on the East Side of Ocean Drive at 11th Street.

Super Saturday in the Street

The local businesses take it to the street with an extreme tailgating event in downtown Hollywood. Visitors will sample food from locaL restaurants and vote on their best tailgating experiences. Hollywood Boulevard will become a pedestrian tailgating challenge between the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Tailgating packages will be raffled off. Fans are encouraged to come in their favorite NFL team gear. Several NFL cheerleading teams will be on site. Current and NFL alumni players will be available for autograph signing at various locations during the day. Event will be held 12p.m. - 6p.m. Saturday January 30, 2010 in Downtown Hollywood, between 19th Avenue and 21st Avenue. Free event open to the public.

Super Celebrity Fishing Classic
February 1 & 3, 2010
The Super Celebrity Fishing Classic is a high profile, prestigious fishing tournament designed to honor William Bleakley, Marquis Cooper, Corey Smith and Nick Schuyler. Pro Bowl & Super Bowl Fans Can Take Tour of Dolphin Stadium

Dolphin Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, the 2010 Pro Bowl and Super Bowl XLIV and many previous historic and memorable events, will be the unique setting for behind the scenes tours for fans during the two-weeks of National Football League championship festivities in South Florida.

Fans will have the opportunity to experience a guided tour, which will last approximately one hour, and visit Dolphin Stadium days before it hosts two of the biggest games of the NFL season.

Tickets for the tours will go on sale on Monday, Jan. 11 through Ticketmaster outlets, by calling Ticketmaster at 866-448-7849 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $15.

The 2010 Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida, one week before Super Bowl XLIV takes place on the same field on February 7.

South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee to Form Sub-Committee to Look Into Stadium Improvements

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - The South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee is forming a sub-committee to look into stadium improvements to ensure that South Florida continues to be positioned to attract future Super Bowls, Pro Bowls, and other large scale sporting events. This group is comprised of a wide range of community leaders whose goal is to help keep the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl coming back to South Florida. The region has hosted 10 out of the last 44 Super Bowls.

South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Rodney Barreto will lead the committee. This committee will meet on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 12:30 pm at Dolphin Stadium (Gate G) to discuss the next steps related to stadium improvement. The Miami Dolphins will be asked to give an update on the stadium master planning process. Barreto, members of the Super Bowl Host Committee and Dolphins representatives met with Commissioner Goodell on Sunday to review the master plan and will give the sub-committee a report on that discussion.

On February 7, 2010, South Florida will host its record-breaking 10th Super Bowl and first Pro Bowl in 35 years. The country's largest one-day sporting event will pump hundreds of millions of dollars into South Florida's battered economy. With this year's Super Bowl, South Florida will have hosted two of the last four Super Bowls which is estimated to bring over $800 million dollars of economic impact into the community of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. South Florida lost its most recent bid for the 2013 Super Bowl last year. The NFL will decide the location of the 2014 Super Bowl in May.

It's true. In about a month and a half, Super Bowl will roll into South Florida for a record-breaking 10th time. It's all gone by so fast, with the NFL regular season quickly drawing to a close and teams positioning themselves for playoff aspirations. To think that in the next forty days we will witness the most deserving AFC and NFC teams in Super Bowl XLIV.

Next week will mark the final chapter in the 2009 NFL season; at the same time it will mark the beginning of the postseason journey few NFL teams will embark on. A journey that will lead to Dolphin Stadium on February 7, 2010 - where fans from all over will descend on to be a part of Super Bowl history.

And let's not forget about Pro Bowl, which will also be coming to South Florida the week before Super Bowl Sunday. For two consecutive weeks, South Florida will be the Mecca of the pro sports world, hosting two tremendous primetime events.

So stay in touch. Next thing you know the NFL's all-stars will be riding into town followed by the AFC and NFC champions. Crazy, but true.

Super Learning in a Super City

School children are benefiting from the Super Bowl coming back to South Florida. Here's how:

Many of the area's youth are now taking part in the Super Learning in a Super City (SLSC) program. It all started on December 7th, 2010. South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Rodney Barreto kicked off the program by saying,"The NFL always makes sure they give back to the Super Bowl Host Community. This program is living proof of that and ensuring our school children benefit makes me especially proud."

This school-based initiative allows students regardless of their socio-economic background or geographic location to join in the excitement surrounding Super Bowl XLIV. Participating teachers now have online access to unique lesson plans with a curriculum that used the Super Bowl as a platform to focus on literacy, character education, community service and environmental awareness. Participants in SLSC are also eligible for prizes and access to exclusive South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee and NFL sanctioned events.

For a tenth straight Super Bowl, the Super Learning program will bring the excitement of this global event into the classrooms and create inspired learning environments to help inspire teachers and engage students. Academic lessons will be integrated with many NFL role models including Vince Lombardi, Tony Dungy, Chuck Noll, and the Miami Dolphins own Jason Taylor.
Creators of the Super Learning Program, Daphne Boyd and Dr. Kathy Oropallo, commented that South Florida is rich in community role models, many of which students can learn from. Super Learning culminates on Super Bowl Sunday on February 7, 2010.

South Florida weather in the winter season: check. A gathering of over 500 attendees at the Host Committee Kickoff Luncheon: check. A keynote address by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: check plus.

With just two months away from the largest televised sporting event in America, we hosted a luncheon to celebrate the coming of Pro Bowl 2010 and Super Bowl XLIV to South Florida. With the setting of a cool 78-degree sunny day, it was great time to chat about football at Land Shark Stadium.

Some high-profile personalities in attendance included Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross, Miami Dolphins CEO Mike Dee, Minority Owner of the Miami Dolphins Wayne Huizenga, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, along with various local public representatives and Miami Dolphins alumni.

The event was emceed by none other than former Miami Dolphin great Kim Bokamper and Telemundo news anchor Vanessa Huac. It brought the elements of football experience and Hispanic flavor into the festivities as they recapped the upcoming events leading up to Pro Bowl and Super Bowl. After lunch, Kim and Vanessa introduced Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Rodney Barreto for some brief words of motivation. Thereafter, Mr. Barreto set the stage for the person everyone had been waiting for, Roger Goodell.

Mr. Goodell engaged the audience with an opening speech followed by an interactive Q&A session, wherein audience members submitted questions and the NFL Commissioner chose a few to answer. One question inquired into what South Florida needs to do in order to host future Super Bowls. With a detailed response, Mr. Goodell stated some factors that the NFL looks at when considering potential Super Bowl sites, including what the host city stadiums have to offer. He hinted at regions like Dallas and Indianapolis, which have recently "raised the bar" in stadium technology and accommodation. After all, the stadium is the NFL's stage to showcase the most important game of the season.

Before departing, Mr. Goodell briefly addressed a few members of the media and bid farewell to the audience. It marked the end to an exciting day and a precursor to the prime time events soon to come.

There will be a partial home demolition at 3564 William Avenue to make room for the upcoming revitalization by volunteers as organized by Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade.

Expected to speak at the event are former Dolphin Dwight Stephenson and former NFL placekicker Bill Gramatica.

The rebuilding project itself will take place on February 4, 2010, when upwards of 250 volunteers will help revitalize five homes in the Coconut Grove neighborhood.

The South Florida Business Journal ran a piece Friday about the Super Bowl Host Committee's national commercial filmed using the Red One cinematic camera.

This latest piece of technology allows still photos to be taken out of a video without the need for a separate photographer.

The commercial premiered at Land Shark Stadium on November 15th as the Miami Dolphins defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Ronin Advertising Group is waiting for the go-ahead from the NFL before taking the spot nationally.

Host Committee President Mike Zimmer Profile in Miami Today

From reporting on Super Bowls to hosting one

Miami native Michael Zimmer grew up a dedicated Miami Dolphins fan. So when the chance to lead the Super Bowl Host Committee arose, it was an easy decision.

"It was just a tremendous opportunity and I couldn't pass it up. It was just so right up my alley," he said.

A career journalist he spent nearly 30 years working at NBC 6 WTVJ before retiring in October 2008 with experience covering the drug wars in Colombia, the Olympic Games in Sydney and several World Series and Super Bowls, the chance to be on the other side was unique.

"Typically when I would go to an event as a journalist I would just go to the event. But I really wasn't aware of the amount of preparation that went into hosting a game," he said.

Set to be held a week apart Jan.31 and Feb. 7, the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl are expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in South Florida. Mr.
Zimmer notes that an important and often overlooked part of the picture is the additional spending within the community.

"Whether it's somebody flying in and getting a rental car, going to CVS and picking up some items, whether they're going to a restaurant or they're going to the attractions, people come to South Florida and experience all of that."

Mr. Zimmer spoke about leading the Super Bowl effort at LandShark Stadium with Miami Today staff writer Scott E. Pacheco.

Q: What has it been for you to take on an event this big in your hometown?
A: It's a dream come true. I was a broadcast journalist 30 years, and I was able to cover five Super Bowls. So it gives me a unique perspective in not only what's involved in putting together a Super Bowl, but it's also what's involved in all aspects that day.

I actually went to Super Bowl V with my dad here, and so I kind of grew up in this community, and to be able to experience Super Bowls and what they mean... It offers a unique perspective.
You really have a history.

I think what I'm able to bring to the table is not only a standpoint from a customer's end, but also from the standpoint of growing up in this community and understanding the importance of the Super Bowl and what it means to South Florida.

Q: Who approached you for the job?
A: Rodney Barreto, our chairman.

Q: Was it a no-brainer?
A: It was just a tremendous opportunity and I couldn't pass it up.

Q: How is it being on the other side of Super Bowl preparations?
A: Fascinating. We will probably put 350,000 hours in preparation for a game that lasts close to three hours. When I would go to an event as a journalist I would just go to the event. But I really wasn't aware of the amount of preparation that went into hosting a game.

Q: What do you take care of?
A: What I do is talk about the Super Bowl, promote the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl in our community. But the other part is to go to all the areas I work with, whether it's volunteers, whether it's communications, whether it's corporate marketing, whether it's administration.

I bounce from area to area, and I like to be involved in all aspects.

Q: What do you see that the rest of us don't?
A: It's a lot of strategic planning, and we work with all of South Florida from Miami-Dade County, Broward County and Palm Beach. It's coordinating our efforts and showcasing our communities.

It's working with all of our community leaders, working with our executive board and our staff and then putting together a plan to not only showcase South Florida but to also showcase the game.

We assist the NFL in whatever requirements [they have], whether they need the media credentialing center, whether they need help in locating certain things that is what our job is, to facilitate and work with them to promote the game.

Q: When did you start, and how has it been to focus on the shorter deadlines knowing what the big prize is at the end?
A: I started back in October last year. We were very fortunate because we had a number of staff that stayed on from the '07 game. So we had a great infrastructure of people in place to add that great institutional knowledge, and we were able to add new people.

We've been able to work on deadlines quicker because we looked at what we did in '07. We're able to learn from that and say "Let's not make that same mistake," or "Let's see if we can do a better job this time around."

Q: Miami is hosting two Super Bowls close together. Can you rehash that story?
A: Miami had the Super Bowl originally for '07, and they were bidding on the Super Bowl for 2010. It was awarded to New York City and it was contingent upon, and working in conjunction with, their bid for the Olympics.

They didn't receive the Olympics and consequently they didn't build their stadium. South Florida was number two in the balloting, and therefore they were actually awarded the Super Bowl in 2010 before the Super Bowl 2007 was played.

Q: What challenges do you run into that you didn't expect?
A: What happens is that you are able now to look at things a little longer, whereas in my previous profession I didn't have that comfort. So what happens is we're able to analyze decisions, and when you take a little bit longer sometimes you slow the process down, but what it enables you to do is to do some real thinking.

And so what we're able to do is make good decisions with a lot of input from a lot of people. It sometimes bogs the system down, but we're very good at setting deadlines and following that, so when it comes to getting close to the actual game time we'll be able to do critical thinking on decisions that if we had a lot of things going on at one time it might be a little more difficult.

Q: The Super Bowl is much bigger than just a game. How much are your hands in all the aspects?
A: I think what people lose focus of is the NFL they look at the game and what happens is that the NFL comes to this community and leaves a lasting legacy. We're working already now with a number of initiatives the NFL has.

There's Super Learning, Super Kids-Super Sharing, there's Rebuild America, Habitat for Humanity they come in and start those projects now, and a lot of people don't understand or see those projects that the NFL comes in for months and is involved with.

[Through] NFL YETS (Youth Education Towns), there are two centers, one in Miami-Dade and one in Broward.

They will both receive $500,000 from the NFL, and in these tough times, they're matched by the county. These centers will flourish.

There is a program called Super Kids Super Sharing where they will work with area high schools to donate books and sporting equipment and then redistribute that throughout the inner city and the kids with need.

People focus just on the three-hour game, but a lot of things will go on in the community that people don't see.

There's an emerging business program. We focus on generating money to women- and minority-owned businesses, so what we do is when we place orders we look at those businesses and try to... keep the money back in Dade County, in Broward County and Palm Beach County.

Q: How big economically is the Super Bowl for South Florida?
A: The Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl will generate hundreds of millions of dollars in this community. Whether it's somebody flying in and getting a rental car, going to CVS and picking up some items, whether they're going to a restaurant, or they're going to the attractions, people come to South Florida and experience all of that.

And what's unique about this experience is that the Pro Bowl will be a week before the Super Bowl, so it really extends our Super Bowl to almost 10, 12 days. Because typically when the Super Bowl is played people start getting in Thursday or Friday, whereas now with the Pro Bowl they'll start getting in on a Wednesday.

And the Pro Bowl offers up a tremendous opportunity for people to enjoy a game that they may not ever be able to enjoy. It's a $50 ticket. So most people can't afford or get a ticket to the Super Bowl, but they can come and enjoy the Pro Bowl.

Q: What is the extent of your involvement in the Pro Bowl?
A: We're assisting the NFL in whatever they need in putting on the event, whether it's volunteers, whether it's promotion. We started back in (2008) when we had our booth in Tampa to start promoting the Pro Bowl. Tickets went on sale online (Oct. 12), so it's a tremendous opportunity to showcase a premiere game for them.

Q: Being from Miami, did you grow up a Dolphins fan?
A: Oh, absolutely. I went to all the games with my dad. The '72 Dolphins it was part of my dad and I, the thing that we did together.

Q: It's been said from a sheer economic standpoint that if the Dolphins, or Tampa Bay, Jacksonville or even Atlanta make it to the Super Bowl you'd lose some of that overnight business of people traveling here from other parts of the country. Has that been part of the conversation with the committee?
A: I am a big Dolphins fan, so I would love the Dolphins to be here. No host team has ever played in the Super Bowl, so it would be phenomenal. I understand everyone's concerns about the economic impact. But from a selfish standpoint, from me being a big Dolphins fan, I would love to see them in the Super Bowl.

Q: Where will you be during the game?
A: Wherever they need me during the game I will be. Pretty much when the ball is kicked off, my job is done.

We do have an operations director who will work with law enforcement... and any sort of issues at hand, and I will be on call for that as well. So if any issues need to be resolved I will be part of that process.

Q: Does the stadium being halfway between here and Broward affect the way that you prepare?
A: It does, and it's actually a tricounty effort. What's a little bit different this year is that Broward County is somewhat of a hub for a lot of events. The media center is at the convention center, the NFL headquarters hotel is there, as well as the AFC team hotel. So what's happened is there's been a little bit of a shift of focus for Broward County.

But there will still be an NFC team hotel at the InterContinental and there will be events across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, so if you are looking to participate in an event, you will have one in your backyard somewhere.

Q: An NFL representative said Miami's older facilities might not offer some of the amenities some new stadiums do a roof to shield the weather, hi-def lighting for hi-def TV. Is that a concern?
A: The stadium has been talked about and the Miami Dolphins are aware of the issues, but South Florida offers up such a unique environment and such a unique destination that no place else offers, so there's a reason why the Super Bowl will be here for a record-breaking 10th time.

South Florida is a tremendous destination, and I know the NFL loves coming here.

Q: Would you work on a future Super Bowl?
A: Oh, absolutely. It's a tremendous opportunity for anybody to be involved.

Q: You've won Emmys. There were a couple of prestigious awards for your Hurricane Andrew coverage. Where else have you gone in your career?
A: I've been very fortunate. I have traveled the world. I have been able to experience a lot of things that a lot of people never get the opportunity to. I've interviewed every president since Jimmy Carter. I was on a bombing run in an F4 Phantom.

I'm just really blessed to have a "frontrow seat to the world." My career as a journalist has been spectacular, and I was able to take those things I learned and funnel a lot of that into the job I'm doing now.

Q: Is there a story you've covered or a person you have met who has had a lasting impact on your life, your career or the way you see things?
A: The stories that always affected me and had the biggest impact on me was that as a member of the media you are able to give back to your community. You're able help a family in need, you are able to help people, you are able to get their message out.

And though I've been very fortunate to meet a lot of incredible people, being able to help people in times of need, being able to help a child get the medical attention they need that to me was the most important thing as a journalist.

Q: And that's saying quite a bit considering what you've seen.
A: Yes, and don't get me wrong those are tremendous stories to be part of, and I've been very fortunate to meet some of the most powerful people in the world and been able to travel the world and cover wars - the drug wars in Colombia - but those were events.

Whether they were the Super Bowl or whether they were the World Series, at the end of the day it was an event to cover and it was spectacular to be there.

But to be able to help somebody... that to me is the most rewarding thing about being a journalist.

Q: Tell us about your career after Florida State.
A: Ironically enough I was doing an internship at WTVJ and my internship was over and I interviewed with IBM.

And so I was in the process of being hired for IBM... and about a week before I finished my internship, an entry level position came up.

I took that job. And so pretty much when I graduated in 1980 I was at WTVJ until just this past October.

Q: Do you have post-journalism and Super Bowl plans?
A: The interesting thing about the host committee is that once it's closed down [it] ceases to exist for all intents and purposes. And it will be an interesting time for me because I will for the first time be unemployed and looking for a job.

I look forward to all the challenges and the opportunities that will hopefully open up for me after this job.

Q: Did you delve into anything that gave you a push into a career in something else?
A: This job was so different than what I was used to. I've loved meeting all the people I've met. And it's been a tremendous opportunity to be able to do something like this for the community and showcase our community to the world.

Q: What brought you back to Miami after college?
A: It's home. My family's here. I love the lifestyle. I fish. I dive. I'm outside. I go to the beach. I just couldn't imagine myself anywhere else.

From the standpoint of a journalistic career it's one of the best markets in the world. It's always in the limelight of the news world.

Q: Miami is pretty young in developing as a big city. What would you like to see in the future?
A: I think Miami will continue to grow. And I think Miami will adjust to the economy and what it needs to do.

Miami has evolved over the years and it has grown... whether it's through international banking, whether it's through a tourism destination.

Q: Did you play any sports growing up?
A: I played little league football. But I just enjoyed going. For me and my dad it was just a special time for us to go to the Dolphins games and bond.

My dad was born in Czechoslovakia and he knew nothing about football. When I was young I just loved football. I loved watching football. I remember finally getting him to go to a game with me. And he had absolutely no idea what football was. He was a soccer player in Czechoslovakia, so he knew soccer.

The first game I ever took him to it was pouring rain and it didn't stop raining the whole game, and I thought we'd never ever go back. And after that game, he ended up buying season tickets. Until I went away to college, we went every year. It was an incredible experience for us.

Q: What are some other hobbies?
A: I love the outdoors. I fish. I dive. And my family does that as well. It's a big part of just taking advantage of South Florida, whether it's snorkeling or diving on the reefs or fishing that's what I love to do.

Q: Tell me about your family.
A: My wife was born and raised actually on Miami Beach. I have two boys, 17 and 15, at Christopher Columbus High School.

Q: Do you bond with them through the Dolphins as well?
A: Absolutely. We go to the games and we enjoy a lot of the same things. They both play sports at their school, and we just find time to spend together. Whether it's outdoors, fishing or diving, we bond and have a great time.

LOCAL SCHOOLS TEAMING UP FOR SUPER BOWL PROJECT TO HELP CHILDREN IN NEED

MIAMI-Schools in the greater Miami area are teaming up with the NFL, Miami Dolphins, South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee and the NFL Youth Education Town (YET) of Miami for a Super Bowl project that puts books and sports equipment into the hands of children in need. The project, called Super Kids-Super Sharing, has been implemented in Super Bowl host communities for the past ten years and has placed tens of thousands of books and pieces of sports equipment into the hands of local children who might not otherwise have access to such items. There is still time for area schools to join in this year’s effort.

Participating schools will ask their students to gather up gently used or new books, sports equipment and board games from home and place those items in collection bins at school. Most school collections begin in early January. A week before Super Bowl, donated items will be brought to a collection point where they will be sorted, then distributed to pre-selected schools and organizations serving local children.

The Archdiocese of Miami Schools, Miami-Dade County Public Schools and several private schools have already signed on to participate. Individual schools in those districts and in outlying areas interested in collecting books, games and sports equipment as part of Super Kids-Super Sharing may sign up by contacting Susan Groh at (401) 732-1551 or NFLenvironment@aol.com. The NFL provides instructions, posters, flyer templates and other materials to make it easy for schools to implement this project.

Super Kids-Super Sharing is part of the NFL’s environmental initiative for Super Bowl. The NFL Environmental Program plays an active role behind the scenes at Super Bowl. In addition to Super Kids-Super Sharing, the NFL Environmental Program ensures that tens of thousands of pounds of unserved prepared food from Super Bowl events are distributed to local shelters and community kitchens. The Environmental Program is also responsible for recycling cardboard and other materials from Super Bowl events and donates everything from decorative banners to building materials to local non-profit agencies. Several tree planting projects are being developed as part of Super Bowl. ‘Green power’ will also be used to power Dolphin Stadium for Super Bowl XLIV and Pro Bowl.

The NFL Environmental Program is just one of a large number of community events and initiatives implemented each year by the NFL to leave a positive legacy in each Super Bowl host community.

He's Covered Every Super Bowl...

Edwin Pope, who has been a sports columnist at The Miami Herald for more than 45 years, is one sports journalism's most honored writers. He was the ninth winner of the Red Smith Award, is a member of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame and has received a record four Eclipse Awards for the nation's best columns. He's a member of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame and in 1996 received a Knight-Ridder Excellence Award.

He's one of only a handful of writers to have covered every Super Bowl.

Ed Pope spoke with Director of Communications David Silverstein to talk, what else, the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl coming to South Florida. His compelling Q&A is a must read.

David Silverstein: You've covered every Super Bowl for the Miami Herald. Do you have a favorite?

Ed Pope: The Super Bowl in 1973. (The year of the 1972 Miami Dolphins Perfect Season). It was not a particularly exciting game. It was a 14-7 win over Washington. That game was played in Los Angeles.

In fact, the 1972 season was not a gripping season. Believe it or not, it was pretty Hum-drum. They just went out there and won. There weren't any hysterical games. Hysterically great or hysterically bad.

They (the 1972 Dolphins) just went out there like a bunch of businessmen going to work every game.

Not a great deal of emotion before, during or after the game. They were just a bunch of businessmen doing their job.

They never got distracted and never got out of bounds, socially or professionally. The best part of the Perfect Season is they were all a great bunch of people, and that's a great part of the reason why they won.

DS: Your thoughts on South Florida's record-breaking 10th Super Bowl.

Ed Pope: I am happy it's here even though they (Super Bowls) are harder to cover in your hometown. When the game is out of town, (the media) stays at the same hotel, there's a bus to take you there and back from press conferences.

But it's nice to have it.It shows this is the best place to host a Super Bowl.
Number two is San Diego. But we have so much more to do, the weather is better and so is our stadium.

DS: What's your favorite memory about Coach Shula and Dan Marino?

Ed Pope: Nobody has ever asked me that before.

Shula, I always thought, was the most admirable person I've ever covered in any sport, at any time.

I want people who are the same kind of person every day. That's the way Shula was, honest.

He could get touchy and abrasive; we got abrasive with each other. Usually we were absorbed with what we were trying to do. We had arguments and we had great times together.

Shula was the perfect guy.
A roll-up-your-sleeves type of guy. Never said he was genius. He would recoil if anyone called him a genius.

He's my favorite guy to cover. He was informative. He lights up the room, he has great command and great presence.

Dan Marino didn't have a lot to say. But I found him a delight to cover. Although he never gave any great quotes. He didn't try to be clever. He was not comfortable trying to think up clever things to say. I felt for him. He didn't try to fake it. Not the most colorful talker by any means. But he gave me his honest feelings. And he left it all on the field every game. He was a real artist. I don't think there's ever been a more gifted player or passer.

Not since Sammy Baugh.

DS: Your thoughts on the Pro Bowl being played in South Florida.

Ed Pope: The Pro Bowl brings tourists to South Florida, and that makes me happy to see. But I've never been very interested in the Pro Bowl. I've never covered one.

DS: What does South Florida need to do to land more Super Bowls?

Ed Pope: We lead the league in Super Bowls, and we need to keep up (our) standards.

The stadium has made a huge difference.
It's very simple why we get it.
We have the best weather, the best housing for players, the best fans.

It wouldn't make any sense for the Super Bowl to come here less, and it makes a lot of sense for it to come here more often. I realize the league needs to spread it around.

But this is the perfect place to play it.
I've never heard an owner say an unkind word about Miami.

Mr. Pope then said he wanted to mention the Orange Bowl:

Ed Pope: The Orange Bowl Classic, as I like to call it, is the greatest sports attraction South Florida has ever had, and ever will. In terms of the money it brings in, in terms of prestige, in terms of how the Orange Bowl Committee and the weather treat all of our visitors.

I'm a big Orange Bowl Committee fan and I think the Orange Bowl plays a big factor in bringing the Super Bowl to town. Their unselfishness dazzles me.

Super Bowl XLIV is only 100 days away from kicking off in South Florida for a record-breaking 10th time. There is no doubt that it all builds up from here. We may not know which two teams will face off on February 7th, 2010, but we do know it will be a showdown for the ages.

And if things couldn't get any more more exciting, South Florida will host the 2010 Pro Bowl the week before Super Bowl, on January 31st, 2010. Put these two together and South Florida will be the Mecca of the pro sports world in just a few months. South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Receives Key to the City

A huge honor for South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Rodney Barreto.

He has been awarded the Key to the City of Miami in recognition of his leadership.

The honor was presented at City Hall on Thursday October 22 by Miami Mayor Manny Diaz.

It honors Mr. Barretto for being the driving force behind several South Florida Super Bowls and the annual Big Orange New Year's Eve Celebration, among many other accomplishments. Besides his role as Chairman of the Super Bowl Host Committee, Mr. Barreto is also Chairman of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Host Committee is proud to be recognized through the leadership of Mr. Barreto and will continue to put all of our efforts towards preparing South Florida for two of the biggest games in all of American sports: Pro Bowl 2010 and Super Bowl XLIV.

Saints-Dolphins Game at Land Shark Stadium

It's already week seven of the season and teams have begun to pan out as contenders and pretenders. The New Orleans Saints have enjoyed great success with their undefeated start to the year. They face off against a tough Miami Dolphins team with the dynamic Wildcat offense in their arsenal. And the Host Committee will be at Land Shark Stadium continuing our campaign to promote Pro Bowl 2010 and Super Bowl XLIV.

Over the course of three Miami Dolphins home games, we have distributed in excess of 600 media guides to local, national and international media members. In particular, two Monday Night Football match-ups have been the highlights of our efforts, when the Dolphins played against the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets - two teams with plenty of playoff potential.

Now on Sunday, the attention stays on South Florida as another legitimate postseason team marches into town. No matter the outcome of the Saints-Dolphins game, there will be plenty of excitement on both sides from teams with high playoff hopes.

Rest assured, there will be a small reminder lying on the desktops of the media members pointing at the reality that Super Bowl will be coming back to South Florida for a record-breaking 10th time, coupled with the Pro Bowl just one week before.

There is no doubt that there will be plenty of buzz surrounding Sunday afternoon at the game.

TELEMUNDO NETWORK PARTNERS WITH SOUTH FLORIDA SUPER BOWL COMMITTEE FOR SUPER BOWL XLIV

MIAMI– October 12, 2009 – Telemundo, a leading producer of innovative and high-quality content for Hispanics in the U.S. and around the world, announced today that it was named the exclusive Spanish-language television media sponsor for the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee in support of Super Bowl XLIV, taking place February 7^th, 2010 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida and for the Pro Bowl 2010 on January 31, 2010, also held at Dolphin Stadium.

“We are proud to play a part in the Super Bowl excitement as the big game returns to South Florida next year,” said Don Browne, President of Telemundo. “Partnering with the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee for these two major NFL games is a perfect collaboration, as the US Hispanic audience has always relied on Telemundo to be the ultimate destination for sports.”

Telemundo will work with the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee, the liaison between the National Football League and the local South Florida community in the planning and executing of Super Bowl XLIV.

The South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee will support multiple community events that the National Football League is sponsoring.

Telemundo will have a presence at these events which include: Super Kids/Super Sharing, NFL Yet’s, One World, Rebuilding Together, Habitat for Humanity, Play 60 Challenge, Super Learning, and Emerging business.

This year’s Super Bowl marks South Florida’s tenth year as a Super Bowl host city, making South Florida the host city with the highest number of Super Bowls to date. South Florida is also welcoming the Pro Bowl to Dolphin Stadium after having been in Hawaii for thirty years.

IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Tickets to the first Pro Bowl game on the mainland in 30 years go on sale at 7:00 PM ET tonight, the National Football League announced today.

The 2010 Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, January 31, 2010 and televised live on ESPN at 7:30 PM ET from Dolphin Stadium in South Florida, also the site of Super Bowl XLIV a week later on Sunday, February 7.

Ticket prices range from $50 to $195 and may be purchased on NFL.COM and TICKETMASTER.COM or by calling 800-745-3000.

Fans will have the opportunity to see 86 of the NFL’s brightest stars who will descend upon South Florida to help kick off the most-anticipated week in sports leading into the Super Bowl.

Prior to the game, ticketholders will be able to check out the new free NFL Gameday Fan Plaza, the NFL’s festival area at Dolphin Stadium that also will be open on Super Bowl Sunday. NFL Gameday Fan Plaza will feature musical acts, player appearances and autograph opportunities, the largest assortment of NFL merchandise, and refreshments. The national championships of the NFL’s FLAG Tournament of Champions also will take place on a specially designed turf field in the heart of Gameday Fan Plaza on Pro Bowl Sunday preceding the game.

The Pro Bowl had been played annually since 1980 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii the week following the Super Bowl. The Pro Bowl will return to Hawaii for the 2011 and 2012 games.

The 2010 Pro Bowl will be the first played prior to the Super Bowl and only the second Pro Bowl played in the same city as the Super Bowl. The Los Angeles Coliseum hosted the first Super Bowl on January 15, 1967 and the Pro Bowl the following week.

LARRY FITZGERALD of the Arizona Cardinals was last year’s Pro Bowl MVP. Fitzgerald caught two touchdown passes, including the go-ahead score with 4:03 remaining, as the NFC rallied to defeat the AFC, 30-21, in front of a sold-out crowd at Aloha Stadium. The Vikings’ ADRIAN PETERSON led the NFC in rushing with 48 yards on 8 carries and one touchdown. ELI (New York Giants) and PEYTON MANNING (Indianapolis Colts) were the first brother quarterbacks to play against each other in the Pro Bowl. Eli completed 8 of 14 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown. Peyton was 12 of 17 for 151 yards and one touchdown.

The AFC and NFC squads are each comprised of 42 players with 21 offensive and 17 defensive players plus four specialists. A 43rd “need” player will be chosen by the head coach and must be a cornerback, defensive end, linebacker or long snapper. The coaching staffs of the losing teams in the AFC and NFC Divisional playoffs with the best regular season record will serve as the coaching staffs of the AFC and NFC teams.

Touchdown For Life

The Miami Dolphins, Florida’s Blood Centers and the American Red Cross, South Florida Region need the help of Dolphins fans to score a Touchdown for Life, presented by Publix, a one-day 12-hour blood drive at Land Shark Stadium on Tuesday, October 20th from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fans can help the Miami Dolphins reach their goal to collect as many pints of blood as possible.

During this inaugural blood drive, participants will get to meet players, cheerleaders and alumni, get autographs and gain access to a behind-the-scenes look at Land Shark Stadium - including access to the field and tours of the Dolphins locker room.

The first 1,000 registered participants will receive a free ticket to the December 27th Miami Dolphins game against the Houston Texans, a free Miami Dolphins blood drive t-shirt and two $5 Publix coupons, all courtesy of Publix. These first 1,000 registrants will also be recognized in a pregame ceremony. Additionally, the day will feature entertainment such as live music, video games and magic acts.

Super Kids-Super Sharing

Sharing is caring for the NFL's Super Kids-Super Sharing program.

Local schools have an opportunity to team up with the National Football League, South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee and the Miami Dolphins to make a difference in the lives of local children. They can join in Super Kids-Super Sharing, a community initiative that puts books, sports equipment and board games into the hands of children in need.

Soon after the holiday season, participating schools will get a chance to collect new or gently used items. On January 28, 2010 school volunteers will deliver donated items to the NFL Youth Education Town at Gwen Cherry Park in Miami. Representatives from the NFL, Miami Dolphins and South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee will be on hand to greet and thank students and organizers.

Super Kids-Super Sharing is part of the NFL's rapidly-growing environmental initiative for the Super Bowl. Coming off a disappointing 19-7 loss in Atlanta, the Miami Dolphins hope to rebound tonight at home against a formidable Indianapolis Colts team. With the national spotlight on the Dolphins, all eyes will be on South Florida - where Pro Bowl 2010 and Super Bowl XLIV will come home in early 2010.

The South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee will be in the Press Box tonight at Land Shark Stadium. That's where we will be distributing our latest media guides, hot off the presses. Media members from across the nation will get insight on South Florida and the great Super Bowl tradition we hold. There's a reason why Super Bowl XLIV is the record-breaking 10th Super Bowl to come to South Florida. Not to mention, we're proud to host Pro Bowl 2010, the NFL's All Star Game. It's the first time that game is being played outside of Hawaii in 30 years.

Whether it's South Beach, Las Olas or Palm Beach, the tropical weather here in South Florida sets the scene for a perfect getaway to house two of the NFL's prime time events. Football season is well underway, but at the end of the path is a light that shines bright down in sunny South Florida.

Rodney Barreto Featured During Dolphins Game

Football season is here, well almost. Pre season is already half way through and the excitement of the NFL season is quickly building. On Saturday, August 22nd, the Miami Dolphins played the Carolina Panthers at Land Shark Stadium for their second pre season game. During the broadcast Rodney Barreto joined Nat Moore and Bob Griese in their coverage of the game. The Host Committee got the word out about the upcoming Super Bowl and Pro Bowl - another step towards letting everyone know that South Florida is bringing two prime time games to town.

Next Stop: Regular Season Media Guides

Saturday, August 22nd, was the last home pre season game for the Miami Dolphins and the last day for the Host Committee to distribute pre season media guides. After handing out our entire stash of guides, it's safe to say that they were a success.

Now our attention turns to September 21st, when the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts face off in a Monday Night Football special at Land Shark Stadium. It will be the home opener for the Dolphins and it will be our first regular season opportunity to make an impression on local, national and international media.

Our official guide is underway and will be ready for the season's start. It will encompass everything in South Florida from sports history to tourist attractions and cultural facts. We want to continue to make South Florida a prime location for the NFL Super Bowl. There is a reason why it's the record-breaking 10th time it comes down here - we want to ensure we keep that trend going.
